Going with the flow!
…but whose flow is it?
I want to shout out for you to be more assertive, and decide how you prefer to be looked after whilst YOU are birthing.
Over the last decade I have seen repeat patterns.
Most of the women that I see at sessions that involve any kind of planning are usually second time parents… and I hear the same words far too often: that they had a hard birth, and they want to do things differently this time. That last time they went into birth with the intention to just ‘go with the flow’ as you have no idea what will happen.
For some, they land with an epic midwife, who follows your body’s flow, listens, supports you intuitively, and it can work out beautifully.
And for many, the woman didn’t realise that she had certain preferences and needs until the time. She didn’t realise that she had choices.
Then things felt uncomfortable, out of control, and this is often the opening conversation with a lot of birth trauma relief clients.
We don’t know what we don’t know.
And we don’t automatically have women’s circles where grandmothers, mothers, aunties, sisters, cousins, friends get together each month and share stories.
Preparing for your birth and postpartum period should take as much effort as planning for your wedding.
Taking some time to learn about options, choices, YOUR preferences makes such a huge difference.
